How to say xie xie in Cantonese?

In Cantonese, 謝謝 is usually 唔該 (m4 goi1) for a service and 多謝 (do1 ze6) for a gift or favour. The rule: Mandarin uses one word for thanks; Cantonese uses two, and picks between them by asking whether the other person did their job or went beyond it. The full breakdown lives on 唔該 vs 多謝; this page maps it from the Mandarin side. Paste pinyin into the pinyin converter to check tone marks along the way.

Variations

The mistake to avoid

Carrying 謝謝 straight over from Mandarin. Said as ze6 ze6 it is understood, but in a shop or restaurant it sounds stiff, like reading from a notice. Say 唔該 to the person serving you and save 多謝 for gifts. If you mix them up, 多謝 for a small service only sounds a little grand, while 唔該 for a present can sound like you take the gift for granted.
